Improve Your Health Before NYE

If your year was like mine, it was full of ups and downs, a ton of change, both wanted and unwanted, and a feeling of "what the bleep is next?"  Thinking back about 2017 reminds me of that bible quote about building castles on sand versus building on rocks. When you build on sand and the storm comes, everything sinks away; whereas, when you build on rocks, you have the foundation, and that's what allows you to recover fast. (that's good diet advice as well!)  Build on rocks: This is my motto for 2017, and this is what has prompted me to rebrand myself as "The Conscious Health Expert", because mindful eating is only part of the story. Being mindful in all our habits is the healthiest way to live.

I know we can manifest change at any time in our lives, and when it's stable on a solid foundation. I am grateful that I was able to meditate enough this month to formulate my wish for you for the next 6 weeks. Here it is in 5 ways:

1) Spend 15 minutes per day meditating.

There are so many different ways to meditate. I offer a Sunday Night Happy Hour to help you do that, but you can meditate by sitting quietly; a) listen to the sounds around you, b) focus on your breathing by counting long inhales and longer exhales, or c) generate a well-wish for someone near or dear, even a stranger. Research shows it makes you happier and healthier.

2) Journal it out.

Journaling is one of the most profound exercises, especially when done regularly. It allows you to go deeper with your thoughts, even striking personal gold from time to time. I always recommend journaling your food, your physical symptoms and your feelings. But even further - pick a topic- such as what I accomplished in 2017 - write out all the things you are proud of over the past year. Then, set intentions for those you would like to build upon in 2018.

3)  Let go of control.

Do you believe there is something greater than you at work? Whether the answer is yes or no, if  you are a perfectionist, or a hard-working control-freak, practice saying to yourself a mantra such as "everything is always working out for me". When you get scared that disaster is upon you, look for blessings in disguise, especially as surprises that come into your life that you didn't plan. These are called blessings.

4) Eat more superfoods.

You know I had to mention it. No matter what diet, or non-diet you are on this holiday season - include the superfoods into your diet. Superfoods are foods that have medicinal value beyond their level ofvitamins and mineral. Yes they are nutritionally dense, but they also contain phytochemicals, and other disease fighting compounds that raise your mood, your energy and your SELF WORTH. Yes eating superfoods, can change your life, by lowering blood sugar fluctuations, improve hormonal activity, and improving healing response; 3 necessary components of good thought patterns, and positive outlook. Superfoods include:

Berries and Pomegranates. ...
Cacao. ...
Orange Root Vegetables. ...
Avocados. ...
Coconut. ...
Walnuts, Flax, Chia, and pumpkin seed. s...
Spirulina and seaweeds. ...
Celtic sea salt and Himalayan salt. ...
Mushrooms including reishi, oysters, lionsmane, chaga. ...
Spices like turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, garlic, cayenne. ...
Natural ferments from the fridge section such as sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi, kombucha and miso. ...

Check out my recipes, for ideas how you can use many of these ingredients.

If you're looking for more nutrition knowledge, I'm teaching a 4 week-program in Brooklyn Heights in January, 2018 on how to fight chronic disease with food.  More info HERE.

5)  Engage your senses.

Each of your 5 senses are attached to the central nervous system so the more love you give your senses the better your sleep, positive emotion and stress levels will be.  To stimulate positive feelings -

Touch--Rub your own body, or a soft blanket - luxuriate in the experience

Smell--Smell fresh cut flower, or essential oils - activate your limbic system of emotional response

Sound--Listen to beautiful sounds of birds chirping, classical or jazz music or rushing water

Sight--Feast your eyes on something beautiful - a child, a garden, a painting

Taste--Elevate your palate - spend time seasoning your food  - with fresh herbs, maple syrup or sea salt - then savor the flavors.
